Using Oracle and PeopleSoft (PS) Query provides a flexible end-user data analysis solution for a lot of business needs, all secured behind multiple levels of built in PeopleSoft security. Unfortunately, as some institutions increase in size and volume the underlying row-level security that is a feature in PS Query can become cumbersome and inefficient. This can result in queries which run slowly or cannot complete at all leading to either the disuse of PS Query in general, or a reduction in enforcing row-level security on queries. The University of Wisconsin addressed this issue by materializing three of the most used row-level security views and creating a maintenance Application Engine to support them. This customization has resulted in a significant improvement in query runtimes with no loss in query security.
