My name is Maria Bates and I am the Director of Student Financial Services at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). I began my career in higher education in the Student Financial Services Office at RIT in 2005 as a Student Financial Services Counselor. During this time, I worked directly with students and families to help them determine the best, most affordable financial plan. I also administered the monthly payment plan in our legacy system.
In 2010, we began the conversion process to PeopleSoft Campus Solutions and was also the beginning of my systems work. I was a key member of the conversion and implementation team when we went live in July 2012. I took on the role of Functional Systems Analyst and was responsible for the configuration of tuition and fees. I developed a tuition calculation verification process to ensure the accuracy of tuition for each of our 19,000+ students.
In 2018, I became the Associate Director and began managing the accounting staff and functions that provide services to the RIT community including student account payments, federal and state payments for both student receivables as well as the institute’s accounts receivable program, payroll advances, petty cash, institutional deposits, and university bank deposits.
I became the Director in 2019 and now manage our collection agency, attorney and loan servicer relationships and provide oversight of policies and procedures in order to ensure compliance.
I am always looking to utilize new technologies to improve service and provide efficiencies and strive to provide automation wherever and whenever possible.
