"What is a wiki?" they ask

I was on a conference call yesterday and we got to talking about all of the new tools that HEUG Online is rolling out. Then there was an anonymous call out: "what is a wiki, by the way?"Okay, haven't we all had this conversation? I never have a good canned answer for these things, so here you go:
