Dr. Michael Russell has over 30 years of Higher Education experience. In February of 2018, Dr. Russell currently serves as the CIO of the Virginia Community College System. His primary responsibilities include vision, strategy, planning, applications (ERP, LMS and DM), infrastructure (Network, Data Centers, Servers and Storage and Operations), and security services for the system office, 23 colleges and a Shared Services Center within the VCCS. Dr. Russell previously held positions at CampusWorks as a Site Manager/CIO for the San Jose Evergreen Community College District, Montgomery College as the Vice President of Instructional and Information Technology/Chief Information Officer, Georgia State University as the Director of Academic Technology Services, Chief Information Officer at University of West Georgia and the Director of ITS/CIO at Christopher Newport University. His other employment experiences include work as a Computer Systems Senior Engineer and a Senior Programmer/Analyst with the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia.
Dr. Russell has a keen interest in aligning innovative technologies with new business processes. He also focuses on Academic and Analytics applications and services that lead to increased student success.
Russell earned his doctorate (Ed.D.) in Higher Education Administration from The George Washington University. He also holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University, a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Old Dominion University, and a certificate in Computer Programming from the USDA Graduate School.
