A Clear Path to Success: Change Management at the University of California

By Bill Bonner posted 01-27-2017 09:33 AM

The University of California (UC) employs 200,000 people over 10 campuses and five medical centers. In order to streamline payroll, benefits, human resources and academic processes, the university created the UCPath Center as part of its “Working Smarter” initiative. The UCPath Center will serve as the university’s administrative command center, aligning technology and information while supporting UC’s core mission.

Two major things will be necessary for a successful execution of the project: communication and planning. UC decision makers knew they wanted the process to be collaborative, but how can a large organization go about gathering the right information from its stakeholders and then implement a plan that address everyone’s needs?

By partnering with Huron, UC was able to:

  • collaborate and engage with the right stakeholders in each campus and medical center
  • identify communication and technology gaps
  • implement a plan to prioritize the changes
  • keep employees informed of the changes and what to expect at each stage

Huron’s expertise in the realm of higher education continues to provide UC with clear strategies for change management. The firm will be working with the university on balancing priorities and employee collaboration from beginning to end. UC expects to deploy the pilot program in August 2017.
