Session Title:                     App Designer - Not Just for Developers

Description:                       Do you have your Developer on Speed Dial? Do you need to know how data is organized within your PeopleSoft database? Do you need to know what Queries are using a specific field? Do you need to know where a specific record/field is available within the on-line system? Is there some data in the system I just don't currently have access to via PIA that I need to request access to?  Where does your developer go to get you these answers?  Well, many of them can be answered through the use of the meta-data stored in your PeopleSoft databases and available through Application Designer.    But, wait... That is a Developer's tool.  They don't want functional users messing with code.    Application Designer can be a valuable tool to more than just developers.  Let's dive into how security can be established for non-developers to allow them the ability to use the power of the object definitions to answer questions they face in their roles.  Once we have that setup properly... let the fun begin!  We'll walk through: * Understanding some of the basic object definitions * Learning about some of the tools to find out how one object relates to another. * Learn what information from a PIA session can help as starting points within Application Designer to find more information.

Session Title:                     Compliance and Fraud: Risk Reduction Roadmap

Description:                       The digitization of payments brought speed and ease to processing but bad actors continue to find new and clever ways to launder, hack, and phish payment and user data. This has led to increased security measures and compliance standards by governments and the payment card industry (PCI). Universities are prime targets but taking a platform approach to your payment solution will help mitigate security risks and improve PCI compliance management.     During this session, our presenters will walk through the strategy of taking a platform approach to payments on campus, discuss how to determine your level of risk, and explore the tools available to help prevent fraud from both a payments and operational perspective. Attendees will come away with an understanding of risk vs. fraud, the techniques being used by hackers, and best practices to protect every point of interaction on campus.

Session Title:                     As Of When? Understanding Date, Time, and Effective Date in HCM & Queries

Description:                       As of when? It’s the most important question you can ask. Databases are like rivers. They’re always moving and changing, and their relevant data changes from minute to minute. Understanding how database software platforms use Date, Time, Effective Date, and Effective Sequence is critical to obtaining valid, accurate, and relevant information, both in functional operations and in queries and decision making. The primary focus of this course is Oracle HCM, PS Query, and SQL. However, the basic concepts directly relate to Oracle SIS.

In this session, you will learn:

•How computers and HCM / SIS platforms “understand” and use Date & Time (what the computer is thinking)

•How that relates to you and your concept of date and time (what your bosses & customers are thinking)

•What “Effective Date” really is and why it’s absolutely critical to everything

•Effective Sequence and how/where it is used

•How all of the above are critical to data queries in both PS Query and SQL

•Common SQL operators that are used for manipulating date, time and Effective_Date/Sequence

•A few of my most useful query expressions (including the really sneaky ones!)

Session Title:                     Download to Excel...Now What?

Description:                       Vlookup, Pivot Tables, and Macros, oh my!   The trifecta of Excel skills, the mastery of which separates the elementary from the elevated (at least in common perception).  "Download to Excel" isn't the end of reporting, it's where U start "going Up".    If you're anything like me, you currently have at least a dozen Excel documents open on your computer.  Whether from a PS Query output, SQL export, dashboard data extract, or any of a myriad other sources, Excel continues to be one of the primary ways we interact with data.  Make the most of it by leveraging some of the powerful tools Excel has to offer.  This session will look at some of the lesser-known functions/features available in Excel in addition to the "Big Three" (no not Kevin, Kate and Randal).   We'll address some general as well as some PeopleSoft specific uses and how, even the best query writer should still be taking advantage of everything Excel has to offer. **Bonus: most of these can be used in Google Sheets as well.

The goal is to create a common data integration strategy in Campus Solutions that delivers reusable event messages and microservices to send real time / near to real time updates of student information while trying to keep the customizations to a minimum and thereby keeping the maintenance cost low. Northwestern will be using APIGEE to maintain the APIs and the messaging queues and to add an extra layer of security.
