Session Title: Using Cohorts for Fixed Tuition Rates at UNC Chapel Hill

Presenter: Kelly Carruthers, Systems Analyst, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
Co-presenter: Kimberley Jackson, Applications Specialist - CS Lead Applications Developer , University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill implemented a fixed tuition rate for resident undergraduate students using delivered tuition calculation processes and custom app engine to assign cohort records to students.

State legislation in North Carolina mandated that North Carolina universities hold tuition at a fixed rate for North Carolina resident, degree seeking, undergraduates for up to 8 consecutive semesters. A team from the University’s Cashier, Registrar and ITS offices collaborated to provide a solution to the mandate. Our primary design goal was to use delivered tuition calculation processes, provide cohort term history and ability to view and maintain cohort values. Our presentation will dive into qualifying rules, tuition calc, customizations, override processes, student responses, and we will reveal our final solutions to these questions:

1) What is needed to determine a qualifying student and their cohort value?
2) How are student equation variables used?
3) Why was custom cohort record used?
4) How does a student know what cohort value they have?
5) What happens if a student challenges their cohort?
6) What about non-resident students?
