STRATEGIC ISSUES:2 ORACLE DEVELOPMENTS

By Peter Dawes posted 11-17-2010 02:34 AM

Hi,
Summer is here( sorry for you northerners who are just about to enjoy the delights of winter) and the year end is fast approaching. As always things are pretty hectic towards year end (our academic year is aligned with the calendar year) so my apologies for the delay in posting the next installment of the SR PAG Strategic blog. This covers the first of the 3 categories, ie areas that Oracle have indicated that they are either working on or have planned to work on.

Oracle Existing Strategic Plans
Oracle has indicated that they are working on or planning developments in the following areas.

  1. Program Enrolment (aka Flexible Enrolment - this seems rather strange nomenclature to me as what we already have seems to be totally flexible enrolment and this development is primarily designed to restrict enrolment)
    i. Define curricular structure for programs of study, with mandatory,
required, and optional/elective courses by stage or level
ii. Student self-service planning and enrollment, governed by the student's program of study
iii. Instructor/Advisor self-service access to create and maintain a student's pre-determined program of study or individualized program requirements
iv. Student stage (level) progression tracking, including definition, calculation/tracking, and evaluation
    v. restricting enrolment to courses for a program and session
vi. showing recommended courses for a program to select for enrolment
vii. allowing self service enrolment on a block of courses
  2. Research Enrolment Management
    i. Ability to process, track and evaluate students engaged in research projects who intend to earn an advanced degree (doctoral or masters level)
ii. Manage graduate research program enrollments including updates of the
Candidature record, calculation of consumption days, change in Supervisor and allocation of milestones
iii. Thesis Management including notification of intention to submit, appointment of examiners, submission and examination of thesis, and completion of research studies
iv. Student, Supervisor and Administrative access to research related data to manage and monitor progression within research programs
  3. Marks and Results
    i. Define and apply rules to calculate marks, results, and grades for various assignments, assessment items, course components and the overall class and combination of classes
ii. Define and apply rules to recalculate marks following the re-sit of
an examination or other assessment items
iii. Define and apply rules to calculate a result for specified stages of a program or for the overall program requirements
iv. Support the data requirements for academic review committees
  4. Exams
    i. Define and maintain exams including exam attributes, scheduling, and eligibility rules
ii. Support the ability to enroll in examinations
iii. Define and apply rules for “re-sit” of an examination
  5. Graduation Processing
    i. Single location for tracking student’s graduation status thru the graduation approval process
ii. Graduation Processing enhanced to use population selection for:
    i. Insert and update graduation review status
    ii. Update confer date
    iii. Update degree honors
    iii. Self Service enhancements include:
    i. Apply for Graduation process re-designed
    ii. Grad Fee Payment Processing
iii. Student view of graduation status

Your comments, either here or on the listserv or the issue tracker will be much appreciated.

Multi Campus

Multi campus is brown shoes with a black tuxedo.

Multi Campus setup

This has been identified as a strategic issue from the Issue Tracker and will appear in the next update of the blog.

Marks and Results

I don't have any specific information regarding this development, I doubt very much that it will replace grade book, part of it may be an enhancement. I suspect that some of it will be on the grading functionality to allow grades to be stored for more than one component. I will see if Oracle are able to release any more details at this stage.

Future Plans

Some nice things but in general, nothing that our three schools really need.

Does section 3 'Marks and Results' replace or improve 'GradeBook'?

With lack of 'multi-campus'  control with self service in particular, that should be on the list somewhere.  The number of customizations that we are forced to make due to that design shortcoming is beyond acceptable.
