Article Overview:
The intent of this article is to describe, in basic terminology, what a PUM Image is and how to only take certain new features from an Image?

Article:
Prior to the release of PeopleSoft 9.2, the process of updating your CS 9.0 (or prior) Campus Solutions product meant going to My Oracle Support (MOS) and searching for any fixes, bundles, maintenance packs and service packs that were available. A big problem with this process was the time spent in locating the item that you were looking for and also researching the effects that each additional patch contained within the bundles / maintenance packs would have on your system.

As part of the upgrade to CS 9.2 Campus Solutions that process has changed with all bug fixes and enhancements to the system being delivered in a PUM Image.  There are actually two different types of PUM Images, an Upgrade Source Image that will be used to actually upgrade your system from CS 9.0 to CS 9.2 and an Update Image that will be used to deliver bug fixes and enhancements.  It is the second type of image that will be used to continually update your system with new features and bug enhancements (all maintenance activities).

Once you have completed your initial upgrade to CS 9.2, you can begin applying maintenance through this selective adoption approach.

The first step would be to download and deploy the latest CS 9.2 PUM Image from the PeopleSoft Update Manager Home Page. If you are on Tools versions 8.54 you would use VirtualBox, however if you are on Tools version 8.55 you can use either VirtualBox or NativeOS.

Once the latest PUM Image is up and running, you would then proceed to Change Assistant to define this latest PUM Source Database (via Tools, Options, PUM Source).  The next step would be to upload your Target Database Information to the Image (via Tools, Upload Target Database Information to Image).

The actual searching and definition of your custom Change Package is done within the PUM Image PIA application.  Once logged in, you can use the Navigator to go to PeopleTools, Lifecycle Tools, Update Manger, Update Manager Dashboard. Within the Dashboard, you will then select the Target Database, and then proceed to define a change package. Options are available to build a Change package for All Updates Not Applied or using All Other Search Criteria. These search options include New Features, Translations Only, Specific Updates, Specific Objects.

For example, if you wish to apply a specific bug fix (such a bug 21455593 – SHOW PREFERRED NAME FOR STUDENT ON ADDITIONAL SELF SERVICE PAGES), this can be selected.  You will then be supplied with additional information (bug details, along with any additional dependencies that exist).  After you have selected the required items you wish to apply, you will be directed back to your change assistant client to begin packaging.

Using Change Assistant, you will then proceed to define this new change package (via Tools , Define or Create a New Change Package) by selecting the Change Package that was defined in your PUM Image. This process will then commence to create the Change Package that can then be applied to your test environments.

In the above simple example, I was able to select a specific bug that was required from the PUM Image and create a custom change package that can be applied to our environment via Change Assistant.

You should keep in mind, however, that there is a recommendation that you perform a “Make Me Current” every 12 to 18 months.

How to Gain Value from Selective Adoption

PeopleSoft has changed the way maintenance and new enhancements are delivered and applied. An Oracle White Paper is available that outlines how users can benefit from this approach to maintenance (Doc ID 1934210.1).
