Article:
For those of you that have recently upgraded to Campus Solutions 9.2, you’ll have probably noticed that the information regarding the new features and bugs in a PUM (PeopleSoft Update Image) are available in different methods than they had been with bundles on 9.0.  For those Shakespeare fans out there, this rose has a different name, but it doesn’t smell just as sweet - some would say it smells sweeter, but the differences can take some getting used to. This blog aims to provide some insight into how to get the information you desire regarding the contents, dependencies, and impact of a PUM image.

A good starting place to get an idea of the scope of an update image is to look through the Update Image Content List that Oracle provides on their PUM homepage to get an idea of what is out there.  You can access this list by logging into My Oracle Support and searching for the Document ID: 1641843.2.  Then, navigate to the “Campus Solutions Update Image Home Page” using the tabs on the top.  Once you are on the CS Update Image Home Page, expand the “CS Update Image Link” section, and choose the “Native OS” hyperlink.  You will now see a table with links to many useful documents, however, probably one of the most useful documents is the one in the column labeled “Update Image contents List.”  This list is updated by Oracle with each PUM and allows you to sort the features/bugs by Image Number and Module, as well as several other useful categorizations.

In addition to looking through the content list, a good thing to do, to see where the code touches and what objects are affected, is to create a Change Package in your Update Image VM.  You can create a Change Package for all of the updates in the images you haven’t taken, or you can create one just for selective bug numbers or for all regulatory updates that have not yet been applied.  Once you have a Change Package created, you are able to see all of the affected objects, required dependencies, detailed item descriptions, components to test, and other relevant information related to the chosen bugs.  As a developer, I often use this functionality when I am retrofitting and recommending functionality to test for an update, as it allows me to see what objects/code has been touched, as well as any dependencies from prior update images that have not yet been taken.  To create a change package, all you need to do is log into the PUM Image VM, which your System Administer creates after the PUM is released, and navigate to Main Menu -> PeopleTools -> Lifecycle Tools -> Update Manager -> Update Manager Dashboard.  From there you can create your Change Package using many different options such as: all new features/bugs, just specific bugs, or all regulatory updates that you haven’t yet applied.

Please see the Full Blog Article for some generic step-by-step guides on creating a change package for the selective adoption of features/bugs or regulatory updates.  Please note that these steps are generic and do not represent every option that is available to you in the Change Manager.  For more information on how to use Change Manager, and the options available to you in that tool, please see the references noted at the bottom of this blog or read a previous blog article by the CC AG referenced below.
