Alliance 2017 Gives Thanks!

By the time you read this the deadline to submit a session to Alliance 17 will have passed. It’s always exciting to see what has been put forward and what themes emerge. Be sure to check out the sessions and VOTE so that your track chair knows what your community wants to see (please note only institutional members are able to vote).

Besides Hallowe’en, October in Canada means Thanksgiving. It originated as a celebration that corresponds to the continental European harvest festival. As Canada is north of the United States the harvest season occurs earlier and that is why our Thanksgiving day is in October and the US has its Thanksgiving in November. Thanksgiving has been officially celebrated in Canada since 1879 but was not locked down to the 2nd Monday in October until 1957.

This year I am very thankful for the Conference team. There are many tasks to be completed and without their dedication and hard work Alliance 17 would not be happening. I am also thankful to be part of such a collaborative community that is willing to put time and effort into submitting, preparing and delivering the wonderful sessions that we get to experience at each Alliance conference. Your HEUG Board works hard all year liaising with Oracle and working on improving the services for the membership and definitely deserves your thanks.

Hotel registration for Alliance 17 will open on November 2 and you will be able to register for the conference on November 9. Mark your calendars accordingly!

This month’s fun fact: There is an “heavy equipment playground” in Las Vegas where you can drive bulldozers and excavators - http://digthisvegas.com/what-you-do/
