Topic: Reallocating for new reporting needs

Presented by: Lea Erickson, Senior Accountant, and John Jameson, Senior Accountant, University of Wisconsin – Madison

Overview (from the presenters’ description): To fulfill a campus need for high level reporting, University of Wisconsin-Madison, created divisional Profit & Loss Reports using the nVision Reporting Tool. Throughout the creation process, we engaged with campus financial leaders for input on layout and fund categorization, to ensure the report would meet their needs.
The P&L report forced us to examine historical balances created by dated business practices that had historically used a central unit for recording sponsored and gift revenue, while the expenses were recorded on the appropriate school, college, or auxiliary.
We used the allocation feature to transfer revenue for each of the approximately 60,000 projects within these sponsored project funds. Over 400,000 journal lines were created throughout the project, transferring over $15 billion to appropriate departments.
This presentation will focus on how we used nVision to create a Profit and loss report as well as using allocations for more than the typical allocation activity.
