Workshop: Deep Dive into Google Data Studio Visualization

10-10-2018 10:05 PM

Google Data Studio is a free google based tool which allows the creation of visuals constructed from multiple, discrete data sources. The University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) campus began using Google Data Studio in the summer of 2017. This tool is optimal because of speed, cost, and end user ease; surpassing Tableau or Peoplesoft delivered visualizations in these areas. Google Data Studio can accommodate a wide range of data sources, however an Oracle database does not allow a direct connection to our primary database. We get around this limited connection by utilizing csv file uploads. A data structure created in PeopleSoft Query Manager is exported nightly to a user’s email and dropped into the file upload after being received. We will discuss how to structure a query for use as a flat data file. Structure layout users should have intermediate to advanced query knowledge. Visualization users should have basic to intermediate skills. Meant for Business analysts or creative types.
