Moving with times

In the early days of my career as a PeopleSoft Super-User supporting my fellow PeopleSoft Users, I used to often bump into those users who had been with the company for donkey's years and had acquired a certain level of experience that had helped them to do their jobs in a specific and efficient way.

As the technology evolved, those users who used to maintain their employees' leave records and/or their financial records in some spreadsheets or notebooks, the challenge was to convince those users that it was ok, and it was safe to move away from their trusted spreadsheets and notebooks and replace them with ERP systems. At times it felt like teaching a toddler how to walk and convince them that it is okay to take that step forward and leave their comfort zone.

Most of my career life has been evolving around PeopleSoft HCM and I can safely say I'm from the 'old school' and having to grasp the concepts of the 'new school' comes with its challenges.

The other day I was laughing at myself when I realised how I was holding on to the 'old ways of doing things' like my users used to back then and not embracing the 'new ways' of how technology is now deployed.

A colleague of mine used to say, 'experience is relative' and I now understand exactly what that means and how important it is to move with times to stay relevant.
