At the December Community Council call we discussed taking a moment to reflect on the past year. It inspired me to decide to take a moment to reflect on my own past year professionally and within HEUG.
As I reflect on the past year, I’m struck most by how deeply community has shaped my growth. This year has been one of learning, visibility, courage, and connection—and much of that has been amplified through my experiences with the HEUG.
Professionally, this year challenged me to step into new spaces and stretch beyond what felt comfortable. Those moments of growth were often accompanied by the support, encouragement, and inspiration of people who genuinely want to see one another succeed. That spirit is something I consistently find within the HEUG community.
One of the most meaningful experiences for me was participating in HEUG the Mic. It was more than just an opportunity to speak - it was an invitation to share, listen, and be part of authentic conversations happening across higher education. The openness of that space reminded me how powerful it is when voices from different individuals and roles come together with curiosity and respect.
Being nominated for HEUG Famous was another unexpected and humbling moment this year. Recognition like that is never just about one person; it reflects collaboration, mentorship, and a community that notices and values contribution. I’m grateful to be part of a network that celebrates one another’s efforts and impact so intentionally.
Presenting at HEUG Europe was a true highlight. It reinforced how global this community is and how shared our challenges, ideas, and aspirations are - regardless of geography. Engaging with colleagues from around the world broadened my perspective and reminded me that innovation in higher education is strongest when we learn from one another.
What stands out most, though, is not any single experience - it’s the collective accomplishments of the HEUG community itself. This is a community that continues to evolve, adapt, and lead with generosity. From knowledge sharing and mentorship to advocacy and innovation, HEUG members consistently show up for one another and for the future of higher education.
As we move forward, my hope is that we continue to grow boldly, forge ahead with purpose, and encourage engagement at every level. Whether that means speaking up, presenting, mentoring, volunteering, or simply asking thoughtful questions - every form of participation matters. The strength of HEUG has always been its people, and the future will be shaped by those willing to lean in.
Happy New Year friends!
