Business Analysis Blog - Software Tools You Can’t Live Without

By Tom Johnson posted 3 days ago

Welcome to a new blog series, "Software Tools You Can’t Live Without." As Business Analysts, our days are often spent converting complex ideas into clear requirements, or translating difficult concepts into easily understood documents, and the efficiency of our work depends heavily on the digital tools we carry. Over the next seven posts, I’ll be highlighting some of the specific applications that I used to keep projects on track, from visual documentation to data cleanup to back-end requirement tracking. My goal is to share how these tools streamline the BA workflow and offer practical tips you can apply to your own daily tasks. However, every BA’s experience is different, so I invite you to participate! Whether it’s a time-saving hack for a tool I mention or an application you think I missed, please jump into the comments or reply to these emails.

Let’s build a better toolkit together.

The "BA Survival Kit" Blog Series Outline

  • SnagIt: The art of visual communication and rapid documentation.
  • Jira: Navigating the source of truth for requirements and user stories.
  • Excel: Beyond the spreadsheet—using the grid for world-class process maps.
  • Notepad++: The "Swiss Army Knife" for data cleanup and technical analysis.
  • Evernote: Building a "Second Brain" for stakeholder interviews and research.
  • Oracle SQL Developer: Mastering the data layer and backend validation.
  • The Multi-Browser Strategy: Why "One Browser" isn't enough for modern UAT and testing.

The V File Viewer is a great tool for inspecting text data files.  Among many other features you can search vertically in specific column numbers, view the column numbers, view in hex, etc.
