Hi all,
At ANU our statistical services unit brought this to our attention in
mid 2004. The decision made was to change the mapping for our RC
(Research Continuing) and IP (In Progress - used for courses that go
over multiple semesters - before the final grade can be given) grades to
return E355 as '3' successfully completed instead of '4'. Our research
students either graduate or terminate (which is determined by milestone
submission etc), so until one of these outcomes takes place, they are
successfully completing.
Regards,

Unit StatusMapping & Research Courses
Dear All
Hope this email finds you well.
It would be appreciated if you could direct this enquiry to staff who
are responsible for DEEWR reporting.
My question for you is, how does your institution code E355 Unit of
Study Completion Status in the Unit of Study Completions (CU) file for
your Research and Honours courses?
The DEEWR description for this element indicates the code should
identify whether a student has completed, failed, withdrawn from, will
commence later in the year or is still in process of completing the unit
of study (course).
As our Research and Honours courses are ungraded we report these courses
as a code "4" (to be commenced later in the year, or still in process
of completing, or completion status not yet determined). When a
student completes their program a value of "3" successfully completed is
reported in that year's CU file.
Reporting a value of "4" however counts towards the percentage of
"incompletes" in the file. DEEWR's expectations are that Higher
Education Providers should have less than 2% of all records with a
status other than "4".
I look forward to hearing from you either on-line or at the HEUG in
Brisbane.
Cheers
Julie
