    Dear ANZ HEUG Members

Many of you may recall that in late 2006 we conducted an exercise using the
results of the PeopleSoft Ping function for benchmarking Application
Architectures between ANZ institutions. The purpose of this activity was to
present a comparative assessment between institutions and potentially
identify “best practice” approaches to Application Architecture.

While the PeopleSoft Ping function is only a limited measure it does
provide a basis and a valid point of comparison between PeopleSoft sites.
The results of this activity was presented at an ANZ HEUG meeting in late
2006 and Alliance 2007. A copy of this presentation is attached.

*Recently a number of institutions have expressed interest in repeating the
process and this email is requesting your institution's participation in
    this new exercise.*

What I am asking is for someone from each institution to run a PeopleSoft
Ping preferably on a production environment. These PeopleSoft Ping results
should then be copied into the attached spreadsheet and returned to myself (
T.Neaton@griffith.edu.au) by 23 October 2012. Instructions are included in
the spreadsheet. You may submit multiple responses if you have different
systems on different generations of PeopleTools and/or very different
    Architectures.

I have included some background information on PeopleSoft Ping below.

Thank you in advance for your participation.

*I will collate the responses and present these in the ANZ Technical Group
Meeting at the Alliance Down Under 2012 on the Gold Coast in November.*

Please contact myself (T.Neaton@griffith.edu.au) if you require any further
    information.

    Regards

    Tony Neaton

    *What is PeopleSoft Ping?*

PeopleSoft Ping is a standard utility function within the PeopleTools 8
toolset. PeopleSoft Ping has nothing to do with the “ping command” in a
    network analysis context.

PeopleSoft Ping repeatedly executes a "standard dummy" component, at
specified intervals, and records the execution time at each tier of the
application architecture (Browser, Web server, Application Server,
Database) along with the overall time.

Related options allow a user to view the recorded results in tabular or
    graphical form.

The primary purpose of PeopleSoft Ping is a basic diagnostic tool for
identifying response time performance problems. Specifically it can be run
continually or when response time performance problems arise to profile
system performance over a period. Simple identification of variances
against typical or average measures on a particular application
architecture tier provides a direction for further analysis.

    *How do I run it?*

Navigate to PeopleTools/Utilities/PeopleSoft Ping on the Enterprise Menu.

*How PeopleSoft Ping can be used in a Benchmarking Context?*

It is expected that when PeopleSoft Ping results from various systems are
collated and compared some quite wide variations of measures will be noted.
Subsequent analysis and discussion can centre on issues of Application
Architecture to account for such variations.

    Factors will include:

    • CPU speed and hardware capability,
    • Database technology and versions,
    • Database connection options,
    • Physical or logical tiers,
    • Tuxedo load balancing and failover options,
    • Web server load balancing mechanism,
    • Network speed,
    • Browser type,
    • PeopleTools version,
    • etc.

From the individual organisation's perspective it will be possible to
relate their measures with the group's high/low and average results for
each tier of the application architecture (Browser, Web server, Application
Server, Database) along with the overall time.

This will provide a basic reference point as to where further tuning effort
may be directed and potential “best practice” approaches to Application
    Architecture.
