Use of 'Little Programs' for Vet Science Selection

10-05-2017 04:33 AM

The Faculty of Veterinary Science at University of Pretoria is the only Veterinary School in South Africa, with enormous demand for placement. Admission is based on a vigorous selection process with 15% of applicants being admitted - academic performance and exposure to the veterinary profession are considered. Applicants are assigned a merit point score based on selection criteria. Previously all calculations were done manually, an incredibly time consuming (and fault-prone) exercise.

The programme is assigned a set of calculation codes to apply the selection criteria, each of which is a ‘little program‘ - simple code calls that evaluate input data and return a calculated score. An automated process is then run per programme calculating merit point scores for all applicants in the programme - the scores for each applicant can be viewed and updated manually if required, and selection lists are created as part of the output of this process. Students are then admitted accordingly
