This month’s FA Coffee break focused ‘Post Census Data Processing and General Data Clean Up’.  We discussed: Repackage plans and external awards to cancel and adjust aid! When academic plans are discontinued and FA Term doesn’t update, one best practice was to update override expiration date on FA Term to be the previous day, which will cause FA Term to rebuild. If you are still having issues, make sure the sure the effective date of the discontinued plan is before the term begins otherwise it will not rebuild. Lots of discussion on the Pell recalculation date! PopUpdates to STDNT_AID_ATRB (View Package Status Summary) to fix blank or mismatched careers.  ...

The TRAG’s Reporting and Analytics workgroup recently published two short articles on subqueries.  This article will dig a bit deeper into the subquery, with several examples.  The examples use student records data, but the underlying principles may be applied to other areas. Maximum Value Subqueries can be used as a comparison value for specific criteria.  For example, the need may be to pull in a maximum effective-dated record where more than one may exist.  A subquery can be used to perform an aggregate on that record’s effective date.  The following is an example of a subquery to select the results from the most recently run academic requirements report. ...

I’ve been thinking about testing lately. And I’ve been trying to figure out ways to make it faster and easier while maintaining quality. With time and resources continually being strained to a breaking point, we are all trying to come up with ways to make things better without increasing risk or cost. Gina Fogelsonger’s recent blog post about non-production environments inspired me to think about things in a new way. Gina lists how each environment is used at her institution for different purposes  -- developing, training, testing, etc.  I was most intrigued by her remarks about a dedicated reporting environment where a daily snapshot of production ...

An education has many variables: location, program of study, experiential learning – the list goes on. But it is becoming clearer that regardless of circumstances, one trend is staying the same: education costs continue to rise, and students these days are demanding solutions to make attending school more affordable. That was one of the upshots of   Passport to Higher Education: A Global Payments Study , an independent report commissioned by Flywire to evaluate the state of global education in a post-pandemic world. The survey polled more than a thousand college and university students from Australia, Canada, China, the United Kingdom and the United States, ...

In today’s competitive higher education landscape, academic institutions must now–more than ever–create powerful, compelling campus experiences that help unlock new revenue streams. This is no easy task, and even more complicated when addressing the requirements of international students. To effectively do this, universities need better ways to support students by providing a simple, seamless, and increasingly digital journey across all facets of student life. A big part of the student journey is paying tuition and education fees, and universities need to ensure their payment systems deliver an optimal experience. Here are five key strategic considerations ...

The belief that every student should have access to an affordable, high-quality education is the one of the core tenets underpinning higher education -- and our society as a whole. Yet in the US, this concept is far from reality: the  Princeton Review ’s Annual Hopes and Worries Survey reveals that students’ and parents’ top concerns about college are related to cost: 41% are worried about the amount of debt that they will have to take on, while 28% are concerned that even if they get into their first-choice college, they won’t be able to afford it. (When the survey was first released in 2003, the number-one fear that students wouldn’t get accepted into their ...

Did you know that the subquery functionality within PS Query can be used to exclude specific values of a field where more than one may exist?  Some student-records-related examples of this are student groups and service indicators.  As many have experienced, if an attempt to exclude students who have a specific service indicator or student group is made at the top level of a query, many students who meet that exclusionary criteria will still be identified because they have another distinct value of that same field. After the query is written to the desired specifications, criteria should be added on the student EMPLID field.  The criteria Condition Type should ...

Few areas within higher education are more complex than financial aid, which pushes students and their families to the breaking point and forces institutions to make painful decisions about where to spend scarce resources. Inspired by the challenges of the last 18 months, a growing number of institutions have begun their journey to build the financial aid office of the future with  Oracle Student Financial Planning.   Joining their ranks is  SUNY Westchester Community College (WCC) . Like many community colleges, its mission is to provide its 30K students with an accessible, affordable, and high-quality education, making the delivery of financial aid a particularly ...

Did you know that the subquery functionality within PS Query can be used to identify a minimum or maximum value of a field, where multiple may exist?  Some student-records-related examples of this are a first term of enrollment or most recent academic standing for currently enrolled students, or the maximum effective-dated academic requirements report stored in the SIS for particular students. After a query is written to identify current students in the desired program or plan, typically using STDNT_CAR_TERM and the term record, another instance of STDNT_CAR_TERM should be added, deselecting the auto-join term criteria between the two instances.  TERM_TBL has ...

Last week we held our annual Academic convocation – the celebration of our past academic achievements and the beginning of a new academic year. It’s a DePaul tradition - the processional of college banners and robed faculty solemnly marching down the tree-lined streets of our Lincoln Park campus to St. Vincent’s Church is a sight to behold.   Although masked and socially distanced, this year’s event was indeed a celebration – it was the first official public gathering  at DePaul in in over a year and a half. Our Fall Convocation is a perfect time to celebrate our accomplishments: faculty promoted to tenure, staff recognition awards, and speeches from the ...

The Technical and Reporting Advisory Group (TRAG) administered a survey to the HEUG community couple of months ago on the topic of “Integrations.” We wanted to get an idea and learn from all of you what integration methods/tools our HEUG institutions have in place or plan on pursuing. We also wanted to get an idea of how institutions are pursuing their integration strategy whether that is within Peoplesoft or outside platforms.   Thank you to all those who participated in the survey. Please take a moment to view the results from our community members. Our plan is to continue this very important conversation within our TRAG community, conversations at Alliance, ...
