Tuition Calc Project was formulated to understand, document and implement a holistic view of the University of Waterloo Tuition Calculation within the Student Information System process. The project team was able to better understand the complexity of the TCalc calculation and SIS through systems analysis, documentation of business processes and supporting and troubleshooting of complex operation issues. The Project later evolved and was renamed Tuition at Waterloo (TAW), and drew from the inventory taken during the initial project (from what was observed and documented on processes) to redesign and implement a tuition system that met the current needs of the university and added flexibility and extensibility to handle future needs. TAW provided the opportunity to re-evaluate the use of existing tools/functionalities within the system that may not have been available or fully understood during original implementation. Along with our goal to maintain within our delivered environment and avoid customizations, we focused on expanding our knowledge of Equation Engine and Equation SQL’s. Equation Engine is a powerful tool that enables you to dynamically select population of students based on programmed criteria. Equation SQL’s are called from Equations and can be used to determine logic or to determine output values. Waterloo will demo uses of Equation Engine and Equation SQL to determine fee amount for incidental fees (Uhip or Co-op) and 1 use case to update runcontrol date.
