Prior to the development of this new mechanism, the only time a Queen's undergraduate student could self-identify was during the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre process. It is estimated that only about half of the Indigenous student population at Queen’s self-identifies. A student led consultations with students, staff, faculty and other institutions over several months to develop the approach, the text, and the promotion plan and content. The new function in the university’s SOLUS system gives all students the opportunity to provide whatever information they feel comfortable providing. It also offers the university the chance to connect with these students, with their consent, promote the specialized programs, services and resources in place to support their academic and personal success, and encourage them to connect with the growing Aboriginal community on campus. The approach includes custom self-services pages in the student center, custom records, reports and communication generation functionality.
