In pursuit of Identity & Access Management Excellence (Univ of Pretoria)

01-23-2019 12:38 PM

Like most other higher education institutions around the world, users of the IT systems at the University of Pretoria, South Africa [UP] - viz. our staff, students and guests – all interact with a plethora of this institution’s systems and applications. In addition to our deployment of the Campus Solutions; Financials & Supply Chain Management; Human Capital Management & CRM suites from Oracle/PeopleSoft, our users also regularly interact with a host of other both Oracle systems (e.g. WebCenter based intranet & Content management / Business Intelligence) and non-Oracle systems – some of which are commercial packages and some are in-house developed. Some of these systems are hosted On-Premise and some in the Cloud. UP’s non-Oracle systems include our BlackBoard Learning Management system; our Library management system; Staff and Student email systems; Parking management system; Physical Access Control system, Sporting Club Management system, etc. UP has endeavoured to substantially automate all user provisioning, and subsequent de-provisioning, processes – with the goal of every user having ONE userID and password that grants them access to the UP Portal, and then from this portal, single sign-on facilitated access to all other systems relevant to their roles at the institution. As new staff are appointed or resign; and as students apply to study; register; enrol on courses, drop courses, complete their studies, etc., processes trigger that automatically create, enable or disable their credentials in a multitude of systems. In addition, these processes also update these user’s permission to access specific campuses; buildings; and rooms when swiping their personal security access card at controlled entrances.
