After reaching the pinnacle of 9.2 for PeopleSoft applications, it was determined that the University of Calgary needed to define a path forward in terms of applying maintenance. Oracle has provided several approaches to PeopleSoft maintenance in its "Upgrade Strategy and Best Practices" documentation and among the approaches included are Proactive, Selective and Reactive strategies. Each of these strategies came with their own list of benefits that impact not only day-to-day operations but also longer term strategic planning. Through analysis of these approaches, it became apparent that there were many factors to consider, including:
- Frequency
- How much to update (selective vs kitchen sink)
- Resource availability
- Benefits of being current
- Selective Adoption capability
- Business Prioritization impacts
- Testing efficiencies required
- Organizational Update/Testing fatigue
- Change Management
- Multiple Applications: strategy the same or different for each?

After evaluating these and other factors, we established a hybrid approach for HCM maintenance that we believe meets both our business needs and our technical strategy while keeping us current....enough.
