From Cloud-First to AI-First: The New Compelling Event for PeopleSoft

By Arvind Rajan posted 5 days ago

Introduction:

A few years ago, I wrote about why moving PeopleSoft to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) was a game-changer. At the time, the "compelling events" were all about technical agility: early access to PeopleTools Releases, automated lifecycle management with Cloud Manager, and leveraging the Oracle Autonomous Database and Autonomous Linux to slash DBA and SYSDADMIN effort.

But today, the narrative has shifted. While the infrastructure benefits remain a powerful foundation, the true "compelling event" driving PeopleSoft modernization is Artificial Intelligence.

AI is the solution Line of Business (LoB) has been looking for

AI isn't something you should adopt just because it’s a "shiny new toy." To be successful, your AI strategy must be rooted in real-world business use cases that solve actual problems. AI should be the engine that finally fixes the slow, manual tasks that have frustrated your teams for years. We aren't just looking for cool technology; we are looking for meaningful change and measurable business outcomes.

For Finance & Procurement: Data and Automation at the Speed of Thought

  • AskData – Natural Language Insights: Instead of building complex Queries, Finance leaders can now use AskData. Simply ask, "What is our total spend by supplier this quarter?" and receive instant, visualized answers.
  • Agentic AI for Expense Automation: Imagine an AI agent that reads a photo of a receipt, understands the context (vendor, date, tax, and category), and automatically submits the expense report on your behalf.
  • Supplier Automation & Onboarding: AI assists with the end-to-end supplier lifecycle—from automated onboarding and risk-scoring to managing document compliance and routine communications.
  • Touchless Accounts Payable: With AstuteAP and AI-powered Intelligent Document Processing (IDP), invoices are ingested and validated automatically, allowing your team to focus on exceptions rather than data entry.

For Campus Solutions: Elevating the Student & Researcher Experience

  • Smart Enrollment & Class Search: An AI assistant can recommend classes based on a student's degree progress and interests, guiding them through enrollment in a conversational interface.
  • Financial Aid Navigation: AI agents provide 24/7 transparency, answering questions like "What documents am I missing?" or "Why did my award change?"
  • Prospective Student Engagement: Your website can feature a GenAI Student Chatbot that engages prospects instantly, answering questions about admissions and housing to improve recruitment.
  • AI for Research Document Processing: AI agents can automate grant reviews and assist in drafting research proposals by scanning decades of publications and grant requirements in seconds.

For HR & Payroll: Intelligent Talent and Benefits Management

  • AI-Driven Recruiting: AI agents can now create job requisitions, scan incoming resumes, and rank candidates against requirements to ensure the best fit is found instantly.
  • Smart Benefits Navigation: A benefits AI assistant provides personalized guidance during open enrollment, answering complex questions about plan differences based on the individual's data.
  • The End of the "Quick Question" Email: Employees can use an Absence Assistant or Company Directory agent to handle routine requests 24/7 without human intervention.
  • Payroll Anomaly Detection: AI analyzes payroll cycles to automatically flag outliers—like unexpected overtime or salary spikes—ensuring accuracy before the "confirm" button is ever pushed.
