The Oracle BI Publisher Desktop tool is used to design reports in Microsoft Word or Excel allowing for multiple report layouts to use extracted application data from sources such as queries. Connected query enables query writers to create a single XML file that contains hierarchical output based on the parent-child relationships of a given set of simple queries, offering an easier way to produce the data, in contrast to creating a complicated query with multiple outer joins. This session will focus on the use and advantages of using a Connected Query as the data source for creating a BI Publisher report. A sample XML file will be broken down to explain how the different sections can be grouped in the Rich Text Format template. Some advanced report features will also be touched upon. Questions that will be addressed include: What is a Connected Query? When is it useful? Are there any limitations with using it? What should be considered when constructing the queries and the connected query? How does one create a BI Publisher report from a connected query?
