Hey Copilot! "This is the dumbest email I've had to write all week, but I need it to sound professional."

Anyone using Copilot to help fill in any gaps you have? If you know that your writing style tends to be brief and direct, you can ask it to coach you to rewrite with a mit more empathy, for instance. Prompting is everything, right? So, the more context and emotion you give it, the better the recommendations you get. One colleague at Duke shared their favorite example. They told Copilot, "This is the dumbest email I've had to write all week, but I need it to sound professional."

This made me laugh and I had to share with this group! Anyone else have a fun Copilot story to share?

    Hello Anna!

I asked ChatGPT to help me with an Alliance '25 session proposal – as you say, I was trying to be brief.

My prompt was:            Can you make the following professional conference session proposal to sound more engaging while keeping it professional?

    I gave it:

Recently it seems that the people who maintain the financial aid module of our Student Information Systems have been particularly needy, intense, picky, edgy...pick your favorite adjective.  If you'd like to understand more about what's going on and what drives the financial aid community, I'd love to explain it to you.  Along the way, we'll laugh and maybe you'll have an idea or two how to tap into the detail-oriented nature of a financial aid business analyst.

We'll start with the timing of the Financial Aid Regulatory Releases for the US and what is contained in each one, move on to what security changes could be needed for each release, and then talk more generally about some of the stresses that come into play.

I will leave ample time so you can ask me anything about financial aid:  things that mystify you, things that annoy you...  Really, ask me anything.  I won't be offended!

    ChatGPT came back with:

Are you curious about the ins and outs of the financial aid module in your student information systems? Do you find yourself wondering why financial aid professionals seem perpetually on edge? Join this for a session that promises to shed light on these questions and more, all while keeping the atmosphere engaging and light-hearted.

In this session, we'll kick off by diving into the timing and contents of Financial Aid Regulatory Releases for the US, breaking down what each release entails. Next, we'll explore the security changes that might be necessary with each update, and we'll wrap up with a broader discussion on the pressures and challenges that come with the financial aid landscape.

But that's not all! This isn't just a lecture-it's an interactive experience. I'll be available to field your questions, whether they're about the mysteries of financial aid, common annoyances, or anything else you've been dying to ask. Your curiosity is welcome, and no question is off-limits.

Join a session that blends professional insight with a touch of humor and plenty of opportunities for lively discussion. I look forward to unraveling the complexities of financial aid with you and maybe even sharing a laugh or two along the way!

    Not bad, eh?

    Cheers,

    Jessica

Not bad at all, I'd say! Did you end up using it for your proposal submission? Any tweaks?

    Hello Anna,

I submitted the session earlier, but will be going in to change the description.

I made only a few changes to pronouns.  It used plural pronouns a few times where I would have used first person singular pronouns.

    Cheers,

    Jessica

    Hi Anna!

I used ChatGPT to help rewrite all of the points I had put together for a meeting agenda. There were a lot of frustrations and negative emotions around the situation prompting the meeting, and ChatGPT was indescribably helpful in shaping those points to focus more on a solution driven conversation. Taking the "heat" out really helped everyone stay on track to get through all of the pain points, while also making everyone more comfortable with the discussion and providing examples.

Thanks for sharing, @Samantha Taylor! Glad to hear that you leveraged AI to assist you with pulling together a positive conversation. Having difficult discussions is hard to begin with, let alone trying to round up folks and set a clear, organized, and solution-driven agenda. I am curious if you used AI to compile notes during the meeting as well.

    Anna,

Our institution allows use to use Read meeting Navigator (https://www.read.ai/ ) for Meeting notes and it is really good.I really like it .Free version let you use for 5 meetings, so I use carefully specially the meeting that is going to be some action items and complicated conversation is going to involve.

    Thank You

For this meeting we did not, but I would like to in future meetings. In this instance everyone was provided a paper copy of the bullet points to add their own thoughts and notes. Everyone took some time and space to digest after the meeting, but we received a very positive response for everyone overall and were welcomed to follow-up individually. It was encouraging and everyone felt they had a voice, but as far as the individual responses go, I wasn't involved. I would say the ordeal as a whole went much better than people expected.
