Reflections from Alliance 2026: A Journey of Knowledge and Connection

By Lidia Anderson posted 24 days ago

It’s been a little over two weeks since I returned home from the 2026 HEUG Alliance conference, and my mind is still buzzing with the wealth of ideas and insights that have taken up residency there. Like a much-loved book, the conference was filled with stories that resonate long after the last page is turned.

A Hub of Knowledge Sharing

One impactful realization hit me like a lightning bolt: the HEUG and Alliance conferences are hubs of intentional knowledge sharing and relationship-building that span the spectrum of higher ed. The influence of these events, along with the user groups and communities of practice, will echo far beyond our time spent at Alliance.

Key Takeaways

Personally, I discovered:

  • Modernizing PeopleSoft: Upgrading our PeopleSoft instance to a modern version using Fluid or Classic Plus is a shared vision that requires collaboration with vital stakeholders—not just IT.
  • Ghost Applications: Many institutions face challenges with ghost or fraudulent applications. Thankfully, there are techniques and lessons shared by others that we can adopt to mitigate this risk.
  • Union Queries: Contrary to popular belief, a union query isn’t as scary as it seems! With basic rules and specific steps, you can tackle errors effectively. And believe me, that’s just the tip of the iceberg—it’s so much more than that; it’s a thriving community.

Embracing Change

Over the years, the HEUG and Alliance conferences have blossomed and evolved. Change can be tough, especially for those of us who have been around the block a few times. Yet, change is often necessary and can lead to growth.

As an Ambassador, Program Task member, and Advisory Group member for HEUG, I’ve been listening to our new members. I hear the joy and excitement in their voices as they share their experiences at Alliance, reminding me of my first conference 13 years ago in a place far, far away. My own excitement and awe grew as I watched and learned from the experts present and felt the kindness of those who offered their advice and contact information. That experience was a launching pad for my success, and I believe it continues to propel others today. Every time I engage with the HEUG community or attend an Alliance event, I learn something new.

A Call to Reflect and Engage

I share all of this as a gentle reminder: while things may be changing, take a moment to reflect on everything you’ve gained. Embrace those precious memories and encourage others to join us in this incredible journey.

Thank you, Anna. It's taken me a while to post this and I hope it inspires others to participate.

Thanks for reminding even the veterans of HEUG how important it is to intentionally reflect on our experiences.
