Oracle's Announcement at Alliance 2014

By Maureen Knight-Burrell posted 03-19-2014 11:14 AM

This year Oracle made a major announcement at the Alliance conference (see My Oracle Support Doc ID 1630033.1):

Oracle is making new, significant investments in Higher Ed solutions that will complement the ongoing investment in functionality to support global Higher Ed operating models in our industry-leading SIS, HCM and ERP applications.

Attendees of the Alliance 2014 conference Opening Session heard Oracle’s major announcement by Mark Armstrong, Vice President Higher Education Development, and Steve Miranda, Executive Vice President Applications Development. The announced investment includes a focus in three key areas:

  1. Student Cloud – the Cloud-based Student Information System, for customers who are transforming their business to incorporate Cloud/SaaS deployment.
  2. Campus Solutions 9.2 release, to bring customers a simpler, more productive user experience and more tailored, efficient application life-cycle management process.
  3. Higher Ed “ready” core ERP Cloud and HCM Cloud applications, with significant enhancements in both solutions. The new SIS, in conjunction with enhanced HCM and ERP functionality, provides customers with a comprehensive Cloud platform for Higher Ed.

This announcement will ultimately impact all Campus Solutions customers, so we encourage you to read the Oracle Executive Summary and FAQ document referenced above, and in the short term, plan for the Campus Solutions 9.0 to 9.2 upgrade. This baseline will be matched with the latest 8.54 version of the tools, which bring many user experience enhancements. Oracle says this is a smaller upgrade, but it will include all the features that have been shipped to Campus Solution 9.0 customers since its release in 2006. So, if you have not applied any bundles for a while, this will be your opportunity to uptake all at once and reap the benefit of an enhanced user interface, and the option to create a custom bundle.

We look forward to comments and feedback from the community.

Makes Sense

It all makes sense to me now. If you are a new customer or maybe want to go more vanilla then you can use the Student Cloud which is all completely managed, hosted and supported by Oracle. If you are a current customer and have customizations that you just can't function without, then upgrading to Campus Solutions 9.2 would be the way to go.

It is not a cloud-based service for CS 9.2. It is a Student Cloud or Campus Solutions 9.2. Two Different Solutions. Thanks for the Clarification!

Very Helpful

Thanks for posting.  This does clarify the message considerably!  Interesting times ahead for sure.   We expect we'll be rolling right from our HCM/Finance upgrades into a Campus Solutions upgrade at CU.

~ Reading Between The Lines... ~

Thanks for the post.  The big announcements gives me plenty to talk about with my campus.  When I read between the lines, it actually spells out my biggest takeaway from Alliance this year.  Campus Solutions need an upgrade, and I'm glad Oracle is working on this and the cloud.

The continuous upgrade model has been good for us but we really haven't had time to properly assess and take advantage of new features.  Continous makes it easier to stay current but very hard to take stock and reset.  I'm glad Oracle acknowledged that.  I expect they are encountering the same issue on a global level, which is why they are making the jump to the 9.2 upgrade and cloud.

I will share this blog with our functional staff as well.

Thank you for posting this.  I am excited to learn more about the future direction of the product, and am hoping to take the opportunity to implement features that we have been putting off.  The upgrade to 9.2 will allow us the time to plan for adequate resources to make this a successful transition. I look forward to hearing more!

Excellent post

I look froward to hearing more details regarding the 9.2 upgrade, how it will impact our institution and timing of the release.

Great Clarification!

After reading the My Oracle Support Document that is referenced, I have a much better understanding of the announcement and what it means to my institution.  I was a little unsure about how the student cloud would impact CS, but think I understand it a bit better now.  Thanks for posting this.
